Falling into Fixed Habits

In January comes a new year, new look, and new attitude. We all are setting goals and motivated for a fresh start to be healthier, smarter, grow in our faith, more organized, more economical, and other metrics involved in improving our daily life. Once summer vacations roll around, a lot of these goals have already went out the door. When kids start school, we are all back to the same old routine we have been in for years. With fall now among us and Christmas around the corner, here are some ways we can prepare now to not lose our new years resolutions again this upcoming year:

1. Set New Year Resolutions NOW!!

As the saying goes, “The early bird gets the worm.” Why not get a jump start on next year’s goals. Start curating habits now. If you fail at some of them, a fresh restart is right around the corner!

2. Not too Late to Salvage some of this year’s resolutions

While the Christmas bells are getting shined up, there is still a lot of time left in 2022. No, you may not have enough time to lose the 20 pounds you wanted to; however, maybe try to lose five so you have less to lose next year. Small achievements will boost morale more than not achieving anything.

3. Don’t have too many Resolutions.

I must remind myself of this. We make our minds up where we are going to “do it all this year.” From being better health wise to reading 20 books. Yet, every year only has 365 days in it. Limited time with unlimited wants is always a challenge. Remember, achieving three goals is better than achieving none of 25 goals set.

4. Remember SMART Goals

As many told you growing up and in leadership classes, goals need to be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. When you write your new year resolution, make sure it fits in these five categories.

5. Track your performance

Personally, I utilize spreadsheets to measure my yearly goals. Some use envelopes, word documents, white boards, sticky notes, and other channels. Whatever you use, figure out a way to see how far you progress throughout the year.

Remember, it’s not too late. Go and finish the year out strong!
